Josh Osborne wrote most of tracks on the album with Kacey. He really shows off his songwriting style in a very optimistic all be it nuanced youthful look at life. Its refreshing from all the pressure on music to be serious and the false assumption that if your being authentic then you must be depressed. “If you wnat to fill your bottle with lightin, your gonna have to stand in the rain” from Silver Lining. Merry Go Round talks about the dangers of pretention and how it does not lead to happiness but leads to self destruction addictions of self medication. Yes Kacey still has fun comparing our substitutes for happiness as Marys and getting Married out of boredom instead of actually being Merry. Another highlight of the album is Osborne’s “Stupid” with the cool line “you cant separate from the salt from the sugar”. It is lyrics like this that give the album its depth. Kacey’s voice carries the hope of the album’s message even through sadder songs like “I miss you”. Another highlight is a song written by Kacey herself called “Back on the Map” although leaving the country feel of the rest of the album and different from Josh’s songs it is more woeful and longing. But obviously heartfelt and personal to her. As a result it shines on the work. This album is best for car speakers with the windows down on a warm spring day with a styrofoam Whataburger cup in the cupholder.
